Fed economist: New Mexico job growth is strong despite lingering inflation

Inflation is moderating. The labor market remains tight. And job growth in New Mexico, in particular, remains strong.

That’s according to Nick Sly, a Denver branch executive and economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Sly, who oversees economic trends in Northern New Mexico, gave an update on Wednesday to business leaders from across the city at Albuquerque Economic Forum.

After delays, EV charging station coming this summer

 The past and the future are set to converge when an electric vehicle charging station is finally constructed at the City of Socorro’s historic plaza.

Work has begun on the promised electric vehicle charging station, announced by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in July 2022. If construction is not delayed, electric vehicles may be able to charge up at the plaza by late summer.

Connor’s Causes 5k draws 185 participants

The 2023 Connor’s Causes 5K/1-mile walk drew 185 participants to Socorro on May 6 to raise money and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

 At only 6 years old, Johnston (now 13) came up with the idea of hosting his own 5K after participating in a run and enjoying the camaraderie and cupcakes. Last year Connor’s Causes raised $4,000, and the 5K entry numbers have increased each year. A final tally of funds for this year will be finished after several groups complete their donations.

New Mexico Tech Graduating Senior, Faculty Member Named Fulbright Scholars

SOCORRO, N.M. – A top student from the Class of 2023 has been named the first student Fulbright Scholar in New Mexico Tech’s history and will work on a research project in Norway. An associate professor also received a Fulbright Scholar Award fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year.

VIRGIN GALACTIC COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL

SPACEFLIGHT

Virgin Galactic has completed the Unity 25 mission to space. Mission Specialists Jamila Gilbert, Christopher Huie, and Luke Mays become the newest Virgin Galactic astronauts. Company now readies for commercial spaceline operations beginning with the ‘Galactic 01’ mission planned for late June.

 The spaceflight marked Unity’s 25th mission, taking off from Spaceport America in New Mexico at 09:15 AM. The altitude at release was 44,500 ft, the apogee was 54.2 miles, the top speed was Mach 2.94 and the landing time was 10:37 AM.

 Completed mission objectives were a final assessment of VMS Eve and VSS Unity ahead of commercial spaceline operations, and the evaluation of the end-to-end astronaut training and spaceflight experience.

Filmed in ABQ, ‘Flamin’ Hot’ tells the story of a pop culture phenomenon

“Flamin’ Hot” tells the story of Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor who channeled his Mexican American heritage and upbringing to turn Flamin’ Hot Cheetos into an iconic snack that disrupted the food industry and became a global pop culture phenomenon.

The production filmed entirely in Albuquerque. The 8-week shoot employed approximately 204 New Mexican crew members, 44 New Mexican principal cast members and 875 New Mexican background and extras, according to the New Mexico Film Office.
